During his last day of campaigning, Moustafa Barghouti, a candidate for the Palestinian presidential election scheduled on January 9, was arrested by Israeli police in East Jerusalem.
He was trying to enter the al-Aqsa mosque in time for Friday prayers.
Apparently he was arrested and driven off by three Israeli policemen.
Due to clashes with Israeli police, he had previously been detained and prevented from political activity in East Jerusalem.
This area of Jerusalem is known also as "Arab East Jerusalem", given the fact that its inhabitants are Palestinian and they hope that this will be the future capital of their state.
According to international law, this zone is an "occupied territory".
