TURKEY : OCALAN'S TRIAL WAS UNFAIRKurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, who was accused of masterminding a separatist rebellion in Turkey between the 1980s and 1990s, was found guilty by Ankara and charged for crimes against the government and "treason through separatism" in 1999.
The European Court of Human Rights has decided that Turkey's trial was not fair according to their laws.
"The applicant was not tried by an independent and impartial tribunal," said the European judges.
Since Turkey will be joining Europe in 2010, the decision puts a lot of pressure on this country.
Ocalan is now spending his days in a jail on an Turkish Island. The first sentence that was decided for him was death, which later was changed to lifetime imprisonment when Turkey was required to meet European standards in 2002.
